Editor Scenes

Within the VSDC Video Editor, a scene functions as an integral component of a project. A single project can contain multiple scenes, enhancing the organization and structure of the content. When a new project is initiated, a scene is automatically created. Its position can be located in the Objects/Projects Explorer window.

To incorporate additional scenes or modify existing ones, simply right-click on the scene's name in the Projects Explorer window and select the desired option. Another way is to navigate to the Scenes tab on the Ribbon command bar: the same options are located there. The following set is available:

  • New scene: this option allows you to add a new scene to your project. It's important to note that the new scene will appear in the Projects Explorer window.
  • Load scene: this feature enables you to load a scene into your project that you have previously saved on your PC in the .vscn format.
  • Save scene as...: this allows you to save the current scene on your computer in the .vscn format. This option is essential if you wish to transfer the scene to a different project.
  • Pack scene...: this option lets you package the scene along with all the resources added to it and save it on your PC in the .vscn format. This is suitable if you plan to move the scene to another computer and continue working on it in VSDC. It's also useful if you're deleting media resources from your PC but want to keep them in the scene for future work.
  • Remove scene: this allows you to delete the scene selected in the Projects Explorer window.
  • Remove all scenes: This option enables you to delete all scenes in the Projects Explorer window.
  • Move up: this feature allows you to move the selected scene in the Projects Explorer window up one level.
  • Preview scene: this allows you to start a preview of the scene either in a separate window (the Preview Scene option) or in the preview window (the Play Scene option).

For even faster access to scene options, you can utilize hotkeys.

Scene objects

Every scene within the project has the capacity to accommodate an extensive array of resources, including standard video, audio, shapes, video effects, and audio effects. To facilitate seamless navigation through the scene's objects, it is advisable to utilize the Objects Explorer window. Positioned at the top of this window, it is a user-friendly search field, allowing for quick and efficient object location. Should the need arise to modify any specific object, a simple right-click on it unveils a menu with relevant options.

Scene properties

To configure the properties of a scene, click on its name in the Projects Explorer window. Automatically, on the right side of the editor, Properties window will display the parameters that can be modified:

  • Scene settings: this section allows you to modify the scene's title, add a description, and control its visibility using the Enabled option. By default, Enabled is set to Yes. Switching it to No will omit the scene from the final project export.
  • Scene's duration: here, you can define how long the scene lasts. With Automatically calculated set to Yes by default, the duration is automatically determined based on the total length of the media files within the scene. If you opt for No, this activates manual duration settings under Duration ms/frames, enabling you to specify the length precisely.
  • Use project color: this option decides whether the scene will adopt the project's background color or have its own distinct color. Adjustments can be made through the Background color and Opacity level controls.
  • Audio volume: this control allows you to adjust the volume of all sounds in this particular scene. The value is cumulative with similar parameters set in the project’s properties.

This software can be downloaded from Free Video Editor description page.

Editor Projects

Starting your journey with VSDC Video Editor involves initiating a new project, a process streamlined by multiple user-friendly options available upon launching the software:

  1. Blank Project:
    • This option is available on the editor’s starting window. It allows you to create a project with necessary parameters using the Project's Settings window.
    • In the Project's Settings window, you can modify such parameters:
      • edit the project Title;
      • add the information about the Author and Publisher, specify Copyright, and Description to provide details about your video project;
      • define video Resolution and set Framerate, Width, and Height;
      • adjust audio settings such as Frequency and Channels;
      • choose a suitable Background color;
      • set Opacity level;
      • select Proxy path;
      • use the Choose templates... option to access pre-designed background templates from the VSDC store.
    • After customizing your project's settings, finalize it by clicking the Finish button. Then, you can proceed to uploading files into your scene.
  2. Import Content:
    • Another option on the editor's starting window is Import Content. It allows you to import media files from your PC and set project parameters automatically according to the chosen file's specifications.
    • Once a file is selected, the same Project's Settings window as seen in the Blank Project described above appears. Here, you can ensure the editor has accurately interpreted the file's details, make any necessary adjustments to the parameters, and fill in additional information.
    • To apply these settings and start editing the file, click the Finish button.
  3. Create Slideshow:
    • This option, also located on the editor's starting window, enables you to create a project with necessary parameters through the Project's Settings window described above.
    • After setting up and confirming your choices with the Finish button, it activates the Wizard tool, allowing you to load a series of images or video files, insert various transitions between them, and easily create your own slideshow.
  4. New Project:
    • This is an alternative option for initiating a project that can be found on the Projects tab on the Ribbon command bar. This is useful if you're already working on a project but need to start a different one.
    • Selecting this option opens the Project's Settings window, similar to the one described earlier, where you can choose the parameters for your project. The main difference between this option and others is that the bottom of the Project's Settings window displays additional choices, the same as at the starting window: Blank Project, Create Slideshow, Import Content, Video Capture, and Screen Capture. This feature provides users with the convenience of determining the type of project they wish to embark on and simultaneously setting up its parameters.

Please note that you have flexibility to modify the project's parameters even after its creation. These options are readily accessible in the Properties window of the program.

Project Properties

Upon completing your project setup in VSDC Video Editor, you'll be directed to the primary workspace, which is designed for seamless editing of media files. Depending on the type of project selected during creation, you can immediately start editing files on the timeline or add new ones. A detailed beginners guide is available here. If you need to change the properties of the project, navigate to the Projects Explorer window, located to the left of the scene. This window displays the project's name and the scenes added to it. Right-clicking on the project name opens a menu with the following options:

  1. New project: this option lets you add a new project to the Projects explorer. This feature is particularly useful for multitasking across various projects. To display a project from the Projects explorer onto the editor's scene, simply click on its name once with the left mouse button.
  2. Open project: this function allows you to load a previously saved project on your PC into the Projects explorer, making it easy to transfer files from a previous project to a new one or make other modifications between projects.
  3. Save project: this option automatically saves the project as a .vproj file on your PC in the default directory User/My Documents/FlashIntegro/VideoEditor.
  4. Save project as...: Offers the flexibility to save the project as a .vproj file on your PC in a folder of your choice.
  5. Pack project: this convenient feature that packages your project file with all associated input resources is ideal for those planning to continue their work on a different PC or wishing to delete resources from the current computer.
  6. Close project: this option removes the selected project from the Projects Explorer.
  7. Close all projects: selecting this option will remove all projects from the Projects Explorer.
  8. New scene: use this option to add a new scene to your project.
  9. Load scene: this option loads a previously saved scene (.vscn format) into the selected project.
  10. Remove all scenes: this option deletes every scene within the selected project.
  11. Properties...: this feature displays the project's properties in the Properties window. A duplicate of this function is also activated by a simple left-click on the project title. Within the Properties window, you can view and adjust various project parameters. These parameters reflect those set during the project's initial creation in the Project's settings window, with the addition of two notable functions:
    • Project path: this option shows the folder where your project will be saved if you do not specify a location using the Save Project As option.
    • Password protection: set a password for your project with this option. The program will require this password to open the project, adding an extra layer of data protection.
  12. Preview project: this option offers a full preview of your project, inclusive of all its scenes, providing a glimpse of the final output.
  13. Export project: this option guides you to the export tab to configure your final output settings, such as format, codec, resolution, file name, etc. For further details on exporting projects, refer to this informative article.

The options for New project, Open project, Close project, Close all projects, Save project, Save project as.., Pack project, Preview project, and Export project can also be found on the Editor tab, which is conveniently located above the scene. This dual placement offers users the flexibility to access these features from either location, based on their personal preference and workflow convenience.

However, the Editor tab houses an exclusive additional feature not found in the Projects Explorer: the Templates option. This unique functionality allows you to create a template for menu quick styles, load LUTs (Look-Up Tables) for advanced color grading, integrate AI models for sophisticated editing tasks, or apply VirtualDub filters to enhance your video’s visual appeal.

For faster access to project options, VSDC Video Editor provides a variety of hotkeys. These keyboard shortcuts are designed to enhance your editing efficiency, allowing you to perform various tasks without the need to navigate through menus.

Standard Objects

In VSDC, standard objects refer to various elements, both visual and non-visual, that can be used in a project within the scene and the timeline. These elements are essential for creating and editing videos, including displaying visual content, playing audio tracks, or altering the characteristics of other objects in the project. Visual objects are those that appear on the scene, whereas non-visual elements, although integral to the project, do not have a visual representation in the scene.

Standard objects include:

  1. Sprite: A container object that can hold multiple other objects, allowing for grouped editing and manipulation.
  2. Duplicate: A feature that creates an exact copy of a selected object for repeated use or further modification.
  3. Line/Curve Line: Tools for drawing straight or curved lines, useful for creating custom shapes or graphic elements.
  4. Rectangle: A basic shape tool for inserting rectangles, which can be customized in size, color, and texture.
  5. Ellipse: Similar to the rectangle tool, but for creating ellipse shapes, useful for various graphic designs.
  6. Free shape: This tool allows for the creation of custom, freehand shapes, offering a high degree of creative flexibility.
  7. Text: An essential tool for adding textual elements to videos, with customizable fonts, sizes, and styles.
  8. Subtitles: Specifically designed for adding subtitle text to videos, with options for timing and placement.
  9. Tooltip: A tool for adding explanatory text or pointers within a video, often used for tutorials or presentations.
  10. Chart: Enables the insertion of various types of charts and graphs, useful for data representation in videos.
  11. Animation: A feature for creating and integrating animated elements, adding dynamics to video projects.
  12. Image File: Allows the import and integration of image files in various formats into the video project.
  13. Audio File: This option is for adding and editing audio tracks, supporting multiple file formats.
  14. Video File: This option is for importing and editing video files, essential for any video project.
  15. Spectrum/Audio abstraction: A tool for visualizing audio data as a spectrum or abstract graphical representation.
  16. Tracking point: Used in motion tracking, this feature allows for the tracking of specific points in a video.
  17. Movement object: Enables the animation of objects within the scene, allowing them to move along predetermined paths.

Adding Standard objects

To add any standard object to the scene and the timeline in the editor, you can use any of the following options:

  • The left side menu next to the scene.
  • The Add object menu on the Editor tab.
  • The corresponding hotkeys, that can be found in the Keyboard shortcuts options.

Once you select an element you wish to add, a pop-up window with settings for the object's position on the timeline will appear. You can adjust these settings as needed or leave them as default by clicking OK. After that, the object will be displayed on both the timeline and the scene preview.

Note that if the object doesn't appear on the scene, you may need to manually set its position using the mouse when the cursor changes into a crosshair. This step is necessary for texts, subtitles, sprites, and some visualizations.

Properties of Standard Objects

In VSDC, in order to view and edit the properties of an object, first select it on the timeline. Then, access the Properties window, which will appear on the right side of the scene. This window provides access to all the modifiable properties of the selected object. For the ease of navigation and clarity, these properties are combined into two groups:

  1. Common Settings: These are general settings applicable to all standard objects.
  2. Object-specific Settings: These settings are unique to each type of object.

To delve deeper into the unique properties of a particular object, you can select it from the menu on the right to learn all the details about standard objects.

Next, we'll delve into the options available in Common settings in more detail:

  1. Type: This indicates the type of object you have selected, e.g. rectangle, video, animation, etc. It's important to note that this property cannot be changed once an object has been created.
  2. Object Name: This line displays the default name of an object. It should be unique within the current scene. Please note that when working with a sprite, this option includes the Edit by Wizard feature, which is essential if you are working with a sprite created with the Create slideshow tool and need to make edits.
  3. Composition Mode: This option is used for blending the current object with another object on the scene. By default, this option is disabled, meaning the object inherits the Composition mode set in the layer's properties on the timeline to the left. However, you can enable it by selecting any mode from the dropdown menu. For more information on these modes, you can refer to our guide on VSDC Blending Modes. It's important to note that choosing a Mask unveils four additional options:
    • Mask Modes: This helps you decide how to use an object: either as a simple Mask for blending objects on the scene or by setting the object to modes like Telea Inpaint or Navier-Stokes Inpaint. These retouching modes use mathematical algorithms to fill gaps or restore damaged areas within the frame.
    • Mode: This option assists in selecting the color channels that act as a mask.
    • Invert Mask: This is used for blending two images by masking out parts of each image. Essentially, it reverses the area of the image that the mask covers.
    • Use Alpha Channel: tThis option indicates that the mask will only consider transparent areas within the selected region.
    • Opacity: This is the final option that is active for each Composition mode. It determines the visibility level of the mask, allowing for fine-tuning of how prominently the mask affects the blended objects.
  4. Coordinates: This option determines an object’s position on the scene (not applicable to non-visual objects), including:
    • Left/X1: The X-coordinate of the object's left edge.
    • Top/Y1: The Y-coordinate of the object's top edge.
    • Width/X2: Either the object's width or the X-coordinate of its right edge.
    • Height/Y2: Either the object's height or the Y-coordinate of its bottom edge.
  5. Set the Same Size as the Parent Has: This option automatically adjusts an object's size to match that of the parent object or the overall scene. This feature is particularly useful for maintaining consistent sizing within nested objects.
  6. Object Creation Time: This option defines the time when an object appears on the scene and timeline, with the following options options:
    • Time (ms): Time in milliseconds when an object is displayed or starts acting.
    • Time (frame): Time in frames when an object is displayed or starts acting.
    • Lock to Parent Duration: This option allows the object's appearance to be synchronized with the start of another object on the timeline, such as the parent object or the object from which it has been cut.
  7. Object Drawing Duration: This option indicates how long an object remains active on the scene. It includes:
    • Duration (ms): Duration in milliseconds of an object's display or action time on the scene.
    • Duration (frame): Duration in frames of an object's display or action time on the scene.
    • Lock to Parent Duration: Allows an object's duration to be synchronized with the duration of another object on the timeline, such as the parent object or the object from which it has been cut.
